Researchers at Tokyo University have developed a new kind of hologram that actually gives the spectator a sensation of skin contact – no goofy data-glove required!

Called the Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display, the hologram projector uses an ultrasound phenomenon called acoustic radiation pressure to create a pressure sensation on a user’s hands, which are tracked with two Nintendo Wiimotes. As the researchers explain, the method doesn’t use any direct contact and so doesn’t dilute the quality of the hologram.

The actual reasons George W. Bush and fellows started the war in 2003 may have been a lot less pragmatic and a weeee bit weird:
In a telephone conversation held with Jacques Chirac in 2003, Bush apparently explained how the middle eastern country must be invaded to stop Gog and Magog, Satan’s little helpers, from bringing about the apocalypse.

Now out of office, Chirac recounts that the American leader appealed to their “common faith” (Christianity) and told him: “Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East…. The biblical prophecies are being fulfilled…. This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people’s enemies before a New Age begins.”

This bizarre episode occurred while the White House was assembling its “coalition of the willing” to unleash the Iraq invasion. Chirac says he was boggled by Bush’s call and “wondered how someone could be so superficial and fanatical in their beliefs.”

Sounds reasonable enough to me…
