The end of the world… again.

Friday, August 7th, 2009

As if climate change, H1N1 and the Evil Fructose Epidemic weren’t enough, I just found out about yet another potential threat to our civilization – a dying star, 8000 light years away:

sstack_rainbowWolf-Rayets are fiery, hot, dynamic stars, but WR 104 also has a sinister side… it could explode as a gamma-ray burst. Not only that, but recent observations of the system suggest it is facing right at us. If that thing blows, and it fires a deadly beam of gamma-rays in our direction, it could do serious damage to our planet.

Don’t worry though – it’s not like you or me or Barack Obama could do anything about it.

That is the subtitle of a new book by Dambisa MoyoDead Aid, which I highly recommend. Moyo knows the facts – and she knows Africa.

Watch her discuss about how we can make poverty history with development expert William Easterly at the Templeton Foundation

Think big with “Bigthink”

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

bigthink ohne grau In the last few days I spent   much time on twitter and while doing that I found some amazing video-platforms which are specialized in informative videos like: docs,  talks, speeches, interviews and so on. Until that point I am still looking for a good word to sum up that kind of videos, maybe: smartfilms, idocz or what ever. Today I thought of “q-tips”. Meaning: films that are not only penetrating your brain, but also clean the way you think. Just joking.  However, if any of you guys have a good idea for such a word, plz. let me know.

Today I don’t just want to be mubble about getDocued, but also want to present one of these informative video-plattforms that was new to me: www.bigthink.com

I like the clean design and the usability. I also like the way how bigthink presents the various topics. Instead of having a regular interviewer their just using flashcards. So basically it is a talk which it moderated by silent questions.

But bigthink has even more to offer. It tries to bring experts and users together so that a real discussion can evolve. That’s a pretty nice approach in my opinion.

I haven’t seen enough of their footage to really make a good judgement, but I got the impression that almost all of the experts who are being interviewed are from the US – and the whole program is a bit too much focused on the US.  But maybe that is just my European perspective.

But despite that, I think it is a great project and I will keep an eye on it – since this project seems to be very young I guess there is much to come.
