On how to solve the “big issues”

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Today’s TED Video made me think. Everybody is talking about water issues these days and that the water supply will diminish. Then some random anybody thinks about the problem and just solves it. And solves it in a smart way. (Btw. for less poisoned water there are even cheaper solutions.)

I think Michael Pritchard treaded the problem differently from what most of the well-intentioned people would do. I guess, maybe I am wrong, that most people would initiate another campaign, found another Ngo and with that trying to get attention for that problem and demanding money from some major institution.

This method to solve problems is pretty time-intensive and has most of the time very little success in really changing something. The biggest success most of the time is that: raising attention. I know that, because I cofounded several small student organisations.

The same goes for the government. If the state tries to solve such problems, most of the time it needs – at least in my opinion – to build something huge, like big canals, dams or digging some major holes in the earth.

I guess what I want to say, is just that: A ngo or a government wouldn’t came up with that simple solution in a hundred years. It is just not how big organizations solve problems.

That all leads me to the conclusion that entrepreneurial spirit and individual creativity combined with knowledge is a force to be reckoned with. There are so many people who just lose their selves in laments like “we are powerless”, “the horror is too much – let the government deal with that questions – we are just average people”.  Guess what: Michael Pritchard begs to differ.

p.s. (Universal statements are always wrong including this one)

Nice little clip I found on some cool edu blog, which I unfortunately can’t recall anymore.

Some thoughts about newspapers …

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

I wonder why there are no personalized magazines (newspapers)? In my opinion old big magazines and newspapers worked, because they could cover the interests of many people. Since 20 years now we have an ongoing trend of diversification of interests. I guess fifteen years ago, there were just two major sports in Germany, soccer and tennis. Now everybody is jogging, climbing mountains, riding bike, playing volleyball, water ball, counter-strike, badminton and what god knows else.

Now, since the interests of people are so diversified – at least in my humble opinion – it is time for personalized magazines. My magazine for instance would consist out of:
News about Germany: welt.de
Tech-News: netzwertig.com
Economics: zhe economist.com, mises.org, cato.org
E-sport-News: team-liquid.net
Inspired Talks: www.ted.com, getdocued.net
Foreign Affairs China: foreign magazine, giga institute
And so on.

If a news-company just would give me the possibility to compile MY newspaper, I would buy it definitely.
I just don’t want to buy magazines and papers anymore, which half their content annoys and bores me (Like health, music, cooking stuff).  I don’t want to read a magazine which aims at everyone and no one, but I want one which 100% fits my interests. And this shouldn’t be a problem anymore in the days of modern media.

This idea of personalized papers also has some further advantages:
1.    It nurtures specialization
2.    It gives specialized institutes and blogs a possibility to reach more ppl and earn more money

What do you think about that idea?

Happy Birthday me :)

Hey everybody. Look at that lovely presents my   gf and her gifted mother gave me this morning! After some tough months of constantly looking for programmers and designers – and try to keep everything together, these presents feel like small trophies to me.

There is just one question, I am asking me now. If I light the candle, would that mean good or bad luck… I am not sure. What do you think?

Yesterday, for the first time I really tried to understand twitter. My goal was to reach people, who are most likely will benefit from getDocued and I discovered, that Twitter is a very good tool for that. Since I am a Twitter virgin, I tried to ask especially twitter-users who already are involved with electures and docs. If there are better ways to communicate with twitter please let me know!

So far – as Google analytics tells me – many people already followed my links. If I bothered you and you don’t like that site, I am sorry! For everyone else: Welcome to getDocued. Hope you enjoy your visit :P

Please leave a comment. Because in the first month – I guess – every web entrepreneur solely feeds on comments and emails. ^^

So long,
all the best!
